Chelsea vs KAA Gent: Gudjohnsens returns to Stamford Bridge for Conference League

The Gudjohnsens have all been strikers, inspired by the goalscoring exploits of the previous generation.

  • Arnor: The grandfather, who is considered a legend at Anderlecht.

  • Eidur: Iceland’s most famous and successful player, who now looks at his sons with pride.

  • Sveinn: Eldest son, plays in Norway for Sarpsborg in a career spanning six countries.

  • Andri: Middle son – a striker who signed for Ghent this season.

  • Daniel: Youngest son, currently at Swedish club Malmö.

Andri continues, referring to his grandfather’s period at Anderlecht and that of his father at Club Brugge: “It is actually just strange that three generations of a Gudjohnsen player also end up here in the Belgian league and in one of the big teams.

“I wanted to be a goalkeeper when I was younger, but I think seeing my dad score a lot of goals during his career probably only inspired us guys.

“We also want to score and be kind of the main man up front, the one who scores all the goals. So yeah, it’s probably something that’s been passed down from generation to generation.”

Eidur came on for his father when he made his international debut. He was also assistant manager when Sveinn set up a goal for Andri in 2021, but when you come from a football family there are pitfalls.

“For example, my father could hardly go out on the street in Iceland without people asking for photos and autographs, and also in Chelsea and Barcelona. But at the end of the day, to me he was just my father. It’s just something you grow up with.

“My eldest brother perhaps took the biggest hit when it came to being compared to our father since he was the firstborn.

“You kind of get used to it and you learn to deal with it.”

On his father’s influence, Andri says: “He has found a good balance between not being too critical or too involved in our affairs when it comes to football, but also being there for us when we need support or his advice.”
