Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana’s loan to AEK Athens ‘will not go ahead’ due to late-stage issues with clubs who ‘still disagree on several points’ ahead of the Greek transfer window closing

The proposed loan of Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana to AEK Athens has fallen through.

The 21-year-old is said to be on loan to the Greek club for a full season, with an option for a permanent transfer for £20 million.

According to Fabrizio Romano, problems with the deal arose at the last minute when the clubs started exchanging documents.

The clubs still disagree on several points and there is little time to salvage the deal as the Greek transfer market is almost closed.

Fofana, who plays for Ivory Coast at senior level, signed for Chelsea in January 2023 but is not part of manager Enzo Maresca’s plans.

Fofana played four games for Chelsea after joining and was subsequently loaned to Union Berlin and Burnley.

He scored four goals in 15 games for Burnley in the Premier League in the second half of last season.

Chelsea wanted to sign Fofana in order to further reduce the number of players at the club.

Ben Chilwell is another player the Blues are keen to let go, while Deivid Washington, Alex Matos and Harvey Vale are still available for sale or loan.

Chelsea have offloaded 40 players during a hectic summer, including Thiago Silva, Romelu Lukaku, Conor Gallagher and Kepa Arrizabalaga, while Raheem Sterling has left on loan at Arsenal.
