Chelsea not in race for Liverpool defender Joe Gomez

Chelsea are not considering a move for Liverpool star Joe Gomez despite rumours linking the defender with Stamford Bridge.

The England international is said to be a target for the Blues with just a few days left in the transfer window, while Trevoh Chalobah could also be on the way to Anfield.

The West London club have signed a string of stars this summer, but according to Ben Jacobs, Gomez will not be one of them. The Blues are not considering a move for the Liverpool defender during the current transfer window, as the 27-year-old’s future remains uncertain.

The Englishman was left out of Arne Slot’s squad for the Reds’ opening Premier League clash against Ipswich Town on Saturday amid interest in the defender.

Aston Villa are closely monitoring Gomez’s situation at Anfield, talkSPORT reports, but a move to the Birmingham club is dependent on the departure of Diego Carlos, who is attracting interest from Fulham.

The 27-year-old could also stay at Liverpool for the rest of the season, as the centre-back proved during the 2023/24 season that he can be a very valuable asset due to his versatility.

Will Joe Gomez leave Liverpool this summer?

Arne Slot should consider keeping Joe Gomez

Liverpool’s willingness to sell Gomez comes as a surprise given the defender’s importance to Jurgen Klopp last season. The 27-year-old made 51 appearances for the Merseyside club, playing in a variety of roles as he helped his German boss deal with a host of injuries in his defence.

Gomez’s contract at Anfield expires in 2027, so Liverpool are not under pressure to sell the centre-back, so it is hard to understand why they sold the player.

Sepp van den Berg’s future is also uncertain and if the Reds sell both, Slot will only have three centre-backs to choose from. There are no signs of anyone else coming to Anfield any time soon.

The Englishman could be a very useful player for Slot should injuries occur at the back during the 2024/25 season. However, should a significant offer for the centre-back arrive, the Merseyside club are likely to accept it.
