Chase Center has generated $4.2 billion for San Francisco’s economy

Chase Center, in partnership with Accenture, released an economic impact report Monday, estimating that the venue has generated $4.2 billion for the San Francisco economy since opening on Sept. 6, 2019.

Chase Center generated $2.9 billion in direct spend, more than $1 billion in recirculated spend and $270 million in intangible assets

The figure includes more than $2.9 billion in direct expenditures and more than $1 billion in recirculating expenditures. About $270 million is for fiscal (tax) contributions and intangibles.

According to the arena’s press release, the study was conducted in honor of Chase Center’s fifth anniversary. The economic impact report measures the activity of the more than 4.8 million fans who have visited the arenas for more than 400 different events in sports, music, comedy, theater, family entertainment and more.

The report measures direct and impacted economic activity in the San Francisco community across several key categories, including direct expenditures, indirect expenditures, induced impacts, and public sector impacts.

Additionally, the report found that Chase Center has had an average economic impact of more than $1 billion over the past five years, excluding the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The figures in the report are based on a cumulative total over five years, from July 2019 through June 2024. Of course, the report uses a July-through-June fiscal year to align with NBA seasons.

Economic impact report focuses on five key categories

In addition to broader economic impact, the report focuses on five key categories: event type, visitor journey, jobs and prosperity, community voice, and intangibles of community.

According to the press release, the highlights include:

  • While the impact is primarily driven by NBA games, the economic impact of Chase Center concerts, Thrive City activities and private events at the venue grew more than 131%, from $160 million to $370 million, over the previous two fiscal years.
  • Event attendees spend an average of $713 (excluding taxes) outside of Chase Center across categories including ground transportation, food and beverage, retail, entertainment and lodging. The five generate a total of $66 in tax benefits and an additional $312 in spending for the economy.
  • In total, 3,334 full-time equivalent jobs are generated annually by fan impact. Of that number, 1,911 are employed at Chase Center and an estimated 1,432 are in the local community. Jobs outside of Chase Center generate $71 million.
  • Local businesses in the hospitality, retail, entertainment and lodging industries within a two-mile radius of Chase Center average a 15-40% increase in revenue on event days.
  • Chase Center also makes an impact on the San Francisco community through charitable work and other intangibles. The location offers meal donations, volunteer hours, sustainability efforts and more.

The report is not intended to measure the incremental benefits of tourism

Furthermore, taxes are estimates based on consumer expenditures and publicly available tax rates. The report is not intended to measure incremental tourism benefits. All expenditures by local visitors are included. Because substitution effects are not taken into account, an upper-end estimate of consumer expenditures is given.

The NBA regular and playoff seasons have an outsized impact. However, “concerts, thrive city and private events have seen an impact of over 131% in two years,” the report states on page four.

Upcoming concerts include Nicki Minaj on September 23 and Kacey Musgraves on September 24. The Golden State Warriors are back at Chase Center for a preseason game against the Sacramento Kings on October 11.

Chase Center to Host 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend

Other upcoming events at Chase Center include NBA All-Star 2025. The 74th NBA All-Star Game is scheduled for Sunday, February 16, 2025 at the arena.

Additionally, Chase Center will host the Division I Men’s Basketball Championship West Regionals in March 2025 and the Laver Cup in September 2025.

In May 2025, the Golden State Valkyries will also begin their first season at the Chase Center.
