Charleston County Detention Officer Charged With Assault

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCSC) – A Charleston County detention officer is facing criminal charges for allegedly wrapping her hand around a 17-year-old inmate’s neck.

Laquinta Sheneil Jefferson, 34, is charged with assault and battery, South Carolina Law Enforcement Division spokesperson Renée Wunderlich said.

The charges stem from a June 8 incident at the Charleston County Juvenile Detention Center, according to an affidavit.

Jefferson was accused of placing her right hand around the neck of a 17-year-old inmate as she tried to get the teen to follow her orders.

Investigators say they obtained the information about the incident from witness statements and surveillance videos.

Jefferson was booked into the Al Cannon Detention Center on Friday.

A judge set her bond at $1,087 and she has since been released on bail, jail records state.
