CEBU CITY, Philippines — The 2024 season of Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation, Inc. (Cesafi) is likely to begin in September, just like the previous season.

This was revealed by Danny Duran, Deputy Commissioner of Cesafi, one of the venue managers of the Palarong Pambansa Boys High School Basketball Tournament, which was held at the gymnasium of the main campus of the University of San Carlos (USC).

While no official announcement has been made yet, Duran said the 2024 Cesafi season will begin in September, but the exact date is not yet known.

In a short interview, he explained that they are looking at the school calendar for the 2024-2025 school year. He added that they would like to have Cesafi earlier, so that they can also complete the games within the year.

Their schedule, however, will be based on the school calendar. Still, he expressed optimism that if the school calendar returns to the June-April timeline, they can also begin adjusting Cesafi’s schedule to an earlier month.

As a reminder, the University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers extended their reign in the men’s basketball team after winning the title over their rival, the University of Cebu (UC), in three games in the finals.

Meanwhile, Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu (SHS-AdC) completed their second triple-double in high school basketball by defeating UV Baby Lancers in three final games, which also featured the country’s top high school player Jared Bahay last year.

Volleyball tournaments

The University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R), on the other hand, achieved a very rare feat by winning three titles in the men’s and women’s high school volleyball tournaments.

Despite their success, USJ-R faced controversy when one of their male basketball players, EJ Agbong, was caught submitting falsified data to play for the team and in the Cesafi, resulting in his immediate suspension.

The University of San Carlos (USC) men’s soccer team also stole the show last season with their historic sixth title.

In addition, three new schools, Cebu Roosevelt Memorial Colleges, Felipe R. Verallo Foundation College and Benedicto College, have officially joined Cesafi as three new member schools.

In addition to the main sports such as basketball and volleyball, Cesafi also offers athletics, badminton, beach volleyball, chess, dance, football, indoor football, karate-do, tennis, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo and e-sports.
