After spending last season on loan at Celtic, Bernardo’s potential permanent move is now edging closer, although personal terms have yet to be agreed.

The player himself is said to be enthusiastic about the transfer, but his salary demands could be a stumbling block.

Manager Brendan Rodgers is keen to bolster his squad with new players before they travel to America for their pre-season training.

Negotiations with Benfica mainly revolved around the structure of bonuses and a possible sell-on clause.

Bernardo’s huge impact last season, particularly in the Scottish Cup final where his effort led to the winning goal, has made him a key target for Celtic this summer.

This move coincides with attempts to extend striker Adam Idah, with reports suggesting negotiations are at a similar stage.
