The passing of the torch in men’s tennis begins a new chapter today as Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz takes on Serbian Novak Djokovic for Olympic gold at Roland Garros.

Two of the world’s best players, the pair have met six times on the ATP tour leading up to Sunday’s Olympic singles final, splitting the encounters with three wins apiece. They have met once on the red clay in Paris – a four-set victory over Djokovic in the 2023 French Open semi-finals – although Alcaraz did win a clay-court match against Djokovic in Madrid in their first-ever meeting in 2022. Alcaraz also won their most recent meeting, when he defeated him in straight sets in the Wimbledon final earlier this summer.

Although he failed to complete the 2021 calendar year Golden Slam, Djokovic can join Andre Agassi and Rafael Nadal as the only male singles players to ever complete a career Golden Slam. They have won all four majors and a gold medal, while Alcaraz, at 21, would be just an Australian Open title away from a career Golden Slam.
