Arizona Cardinals tight end Trey McBride has played in all three games this season, but his status for the Week 4 game against the Washington Commanders is uncertain due to a head injury.

“Trey is following the concussion protocol, so we’ll see how he does this week,” head coach Jonathan Gannon told reporters on Monday.

McBride sustained the injury in a head-on collision with Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch during the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game. Both players remained on the field in the immediate aftermath and eventually walked away under their own power.

Arizona announced The tight end was evaluated for a concussion.

He finished the 20-13 loss with three catches for 25 yards, both season lows. He posted five catches for 30 yards in the Week 1 loss to the Buffalo Bills and six catches for 67 yards in the Week 2 win over the Los Angeles Rams.

It’s been a relatively slow start to the season for McBride after a breakout season in 2023 with 81 catches for 825 yards and three touchdowns.

He led the Cardinals in catches and receiving yards in 2023, though the passing attack now has rookie Marvin Harrison Jr. as a No. 1 option. Harrison has three touchdowns in the last two games.

If McBride is unable to face the Commanders, the Cardinals will likely turn to Elijah Higgins for more playing time.

Higgins has four catches for 41 yards and one touchdown this season and figures to be a target for quarterback Kyler Murray if Washington’s defense can get Harrison over the top.
