Carabao Cup: Preston beat Fulham 16-15 in record-breaking penalty shootout | Carabao Cup

Ryan Ledson scored the winning penalty to give Preston a record-breaking shootout 16-15 win and knock Fulham out of the Carabao Cup.

The third round clash at Deepdale ended 1-1, with Reiss Nelson cancelling out Ledson’s opener, giving little clue to the drama that was to unfold. Ledson volleyed home in the 35th minute, before Arsenal loanee Nelson converted Ryan Sessegnon’s cross to level the score just after the hour.

Both teams were ruthless from the penalty line, with the first 16 penalties – eight per side – all finding the net. Jorge Cuenca then saw his effort saved by Freddie Woodman, giving Kaine Kesler-Hayden the chance to win the game for Preston – but his poor effort was saved by Fulham keeper Steven Benda.

At nine-all the goalkeepers were called into action and Benda scored, followed by Woodman. It was time for the original penalty takers to go again and all five players scored for both teams. Then, at 15-15, Timothy Castagne fired his second penalty wide and Ledson sent Benda the wrong way to settle the longest penalty shootout in a major English domestic league.

Elsewhere Eddie Nketiah scored his first Crystal Palace goal, struck from a narrow angle in the 16th minute as the Eagles won a London derby in Price/quality ratioSam Field cancelled out Nketiah’s opener early in the second half, but Eberechi Eze scored the winner against his old club just after the hour.

“Who is a better player than Eze? For me he is absolutely the best, if he had more luck this season he would have scored five or six goals,” said Palace manager Oliver Glasner. “He is a guy who can always score and he is someone everyone likes. That is why he is on the pitch, because he can score goals.”

Brentford recovered from an early setback to Leyton Orient in another all-London match, Brandon Cooper gave the League One strugglers an early lead, but Fábio Carvalho equalised with an acrobatic finish at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Carvalho then crossed for Mikkel Damsgaard to head Brentford ahead and Christian Nørgaard’s fine finish gave the home side the lead at the break. Thomas Frank’s side held firm in the second half, with Orient defender Jack Simpson sent off in the 67th minute.

Stoke City gained the upper hand Fleetwood Citywho scored the equaliser in the dying minutes to earn a penalty shootout, but then missed four of their five penalties as the Potters struggled through. Stoke interim manager Ryan Shawcross said: “It was probably my best day in football. Take my playing days away, that was the best for me after a whirlwind 24 hours for the club.”

“I didn’t expect it, but leading Stoke City is something I’ve been striving for since I got my coaching qualifications,” said Shawcross, who took charge after Steven Schumacher left the club on Monday. “What I wanted to do was give some young lads a chance, they’re the future of the club and that was my job today.”

Wednesday Sheffield also moved forward when Di’Shon Bernard’s first half goal was enough to beat Blackpool at Bloomfield Road, with both sides making several changes. “It was important to see that everyone in the squad is ready to play,” said Wednesday manager Danny Röhl. “We deserved to win. We’ve done our homework in the cup and hopefully we’ll get an exciting draw, but I won’t look too far ahead.”
