Canebrak’s murder trial is scheduled for January

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) – Officials confirmed a trial is planned for the suspect charged in the 2021 murder of a Greer woman.

Zachary Hughes is accused of stabbing Christina Parcell to death in her home on Canebrake Drive. Officials said Hughes conspired with the father of Parcell’s child, John Mello, to molest her in the months leading up to her death.

Hughes’ trial is scheduled for Jan. 13, officials said. However, the formal role has not yet been completed.

Hughes, an accomplished pianist and graduate of The Juilliard School, has maintained his innocence throughout the investigation.

However, prosecutors said Hughes’ DNA was found under Parcell’s fingernails. Hughes’ defense team said in court documents that they have hired a DNA expert to challenge the findings.
