Candidates with ties to police in final KPK selection shortlist raise concerns – Politics

igures with ties to the National Police and the force’s oversight body have been included in the final list of candidates for leaders and members of the supervisory council of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), dashing watchdogs’ hopes of an independent antigraft body once the new officials are sworn into office.

The KPK leadership selection committee, led by Muhammad Yusuf Ateh, submitted the shortlist of leadership and supervisory council member candidates to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo on Tuesday.

The President met with members of the selection committee at the holding room of Halim Perdanakusuma International Airport in Jakarta, shortly before he left for East Nusa Tenggara for a working visit.

“We have set criteria for selecting candidates, namely integrity, capability and acceptability. Reputation and public trust are also important considerations for us,” the selection committee deputy chair Arif Satria said on Tuesday, as quoted by kompas.com.

The shortlist comprises 10 names as candidates for the antigraft body leadership and another 10 individuals advancing to the final rounds of selection for the KPK supervisory council.

The 20 candidates had passed the interview and health test selection stages, with the latter taking place at Gatot Soebroto Central Army Hospital in Jakarta.
