Canadian Open: Jannik Sinner knocked out by Andrey Rublev

World number one Jannik Sinner was knocked out in the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open by Russian Andrey Rublev.

The world number eight won 6-3 1-6 6-2 against the Italian top favourite in a match interrupted by rain in Montreal.

Sinner has been struggling with a right hip injury and the 22-year-old has been massaging that area regularly, which could be a problem for him as the US Open begins in two weeks.

“It was a really great match from me. Jannik is a great player and he has played unbelievable for two years. I just hoped I could fight with him,” said the 26-year-old.

On Friday, the match was postponed due to rain, forcing both men to play their last 16 matches earlier in the day. Sinner defeated Chilean Alejandro Tabilo 6-4 6-3 and Rublev defeated American qualifier Brandon Nakashima 6-2 6-2.

Rublev will face another Italian, Matteo Arnaldi, in the semi-finals after beating Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-4 7-5.

In the women’s tournament in Toronto, defending champion Jessica Pegula defeated fellow American Peyton Stearns 6-4 7-5 to reach the semi-finals.

Pegula will play Diana Schnaider in the last four after beating compatriot Liudmila Samsonova 4-6 6-1 6-4.

Amanda Anisimova from the United States, who returned to tennis at the end of 2023 after a nine-month break due to mental health problems, defeated Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus 6-4 6-2.

Anisimova will compete against Emma Navarrowho defeated another American, Taylor Townsend, 6-3 7-6 (7-5).

The US Open in New York starts on August 26.
