Canadian Open 2024: Katie Boulter reaches second round, but Harriet Dart crashes out

British number one Katie Boulter reached the second round of the Canadian Open, while her compatriot Harriet Dart was knocked out.

Boulter won 6-4 3-6 6-1 against American Bernarda Pera, who is ranked 80th in the world, at Sobeys Stadium in Toronto.

On Thursday she will face Brazilian world number 22 Beatriz Haddad Maia, whom she defeated in March on her way to winning the San Diego Open.

British number three Dart lost 3-6 6-3 6-7 (2-7) to Russian world number 24 Diana Shnaider.

Dart secured a place in the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’ after she retired from Monday’s qualifying match with cramps and ended up in a wheelchair.

In the second round Shnaider will play against Poland’s Magdalena Frech.

Former American world number one Naomi Osaka defeated ninth-seeded Tunisian Ons Jabeur 6-3 6-1 in her fifth win over a top 20 opponent this year after returning from maternity leave.
