Canada and Uruguay determine third place today

Q24N — Canada and Uruguay will play today, July 13, at 6:00 p.m. (Costa Rican time) for third place at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina. The Canadians and Uruguay have enjoyed a memorable run to the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America.

The Canucks have a chance to equal Honduras’ third-place finish in 2001 as the second-best finish for an invited team in their first appearance in the competition. After reaching the knockout stages by advancing from a tough Group A featuring Peru, Chile and Argentina, Canada defeated Venezuela on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals to reach the semifinals.

Uruguay also earned their place in third place after a very impressive tournament. La Celeste won every game in their group stage against Panama, Bolivia and the United States before beating Brazil on penalties in the quarter-finals. A hard-fought loss to Colombia in the semi-finals kept them out of the final.

Uruguay has the advantage. The Celeste is winless in its last three elimination matches, against Mexico in the 2007 Copa America third place match, 2-2 vs Honduras and a penalty shootout loss in the 2001 Copa America third place match and 1-2 vs Mexico in the 2001 semi-final.

Uruguay have played three third-place matches: a win (2–1 against Colombia in 2004), a draw (2–2 against Honduras in 2001 with a penalty shootout loss) and a loss (1–3 against Mexico in 2007).

Canada could become the third Concacaf team to achieve a positive result in the race for third place, following victories over Mexico in 1997, 1999 and 2007 and Honduras winning on penalties in 2001.

Uruguay has the highest average of shots per game of the teams that reached the semi-finals of the 2024 Copa America. Canada, on the other hand, has the lowest average of the four teams. Both teams registered a similar shooting accuracy during the tournament: 32.9% for the Uruguayans and 32.7% for the Canadians.
