Can Cam Thomas compete for a spot in the US squad for the next World Cup?

Cam Thomas is one of the most promising players of the Brooklyn Nets. If you evaluate the progress of other young talents of the Americans in the league who are also promising players, Thomas certainly stands out as someone who can soon represent the red-white-blue on the most competitive world stage in basketball.

Thomas has established himself as one of the NBA’s leading scorers with 190 career games over three seasons. He’s started 57 of those 190 games, so if Team USA were to bring him off the bench, he could certainly maximize his minutes, just as he did for Brooklyn when he came off the bench.

If the Nets’ rising star continues on his current path, he could earn a spot to play for the United States at the 2027 FIBA World Championship.

The Americans have struggled in this tournament for a while now, with their last championship coming in 2014. The United States also missed out on a top-three finish in 2019 and their most recent outing in 2023.

Nets forward Cam Johnson was part of that 2023 World Cup disaster. If Team USA had at least finished second, it wouldn’t have been considered a disappointment, given the success the U.S. has had in this tournament.

All credit to the Germans for outclassing the Americans in the semi-finals. As for the United States, for a nation that is almost certain to settle for nothing less than first place, they will need all the help they can get at the next World Cup. Thomas could be one of those people.
