Cam Thomas Looking to Improve His All-Around Game – Basketball Insiders

Brooklyn Nets guard Cam Thomas has high aspirations as he enters the fourth year of his career. The shooting guard has always been a capable scorer. However, one criticism of Thomas’ game is his overall ability to be a playmaker. Thomas is aware of this and is making a conscious effort to improve this aspect for next season. Here’s what he had to say when asked what he can do to take his game to the next level:

“Just doing it all, doing it consistently. I had the biggest jump in points from my sophomore year to my junior year,” Thomas said. “I was at 22.5 (points per game), so I think just trying to get into that 25-ppg range, step up my playmaking and just try to keep improving my all-around game. And hopefully that leads to wins.”

If you think Cam Thomas is going to neglect the strongest part of his game, his scoring ability, think again. Thomas is also looking to improve his shooting ahead of the new campaign.

“Last summer I tried to put more emphasis on catch-and-shoot shooting, and I think my catch-and-shoot percentage was up a lot in the league (this past season),” Thomas said. “So just keep working on that and the skills I had when I came into the league, like my off-the-dribble stuff and finishing around the basket, (while) still getting better at catch-and-shoot, and trying to be the best percentage in the league.”

Thomas will likely play a bigger role for the Nets next season.

Cam Thomas wants to significantly improve his overall game

The Impact of Cam Thomas

Thomas has done nothing but improve year after year. In his career so far, he has averaged 14.0 points, 2.5 total rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game, while shooting a field goal percentage of 44.0 percent. Last season, Thomas had a career year, putting up 22.5 points, 2.9 assists, and 3.2 total rebounds per game, while also shooting 36.4 percent from three-point range. As you can see, he is a smart scorer, but the efficiency and other aspects of Thomas’ game have been erratic. Last year, Cam Thomas finished seventh in the voting for Most Improved Player of the Year. Now that Mikal Bridges is with the Knicks, the door is wide open for him to make a run for that award, as he will have an extended role.

Can he make a run for Most Improved Player of the Year?

If Thomas can improve his passing and shooting efficiency, a Most Improved Player of the Award is not out of the question. Especially if he can rebound more efficiently. The Nets are projected as a lottery team. However, if Thomas can lead this team to a potential Play-In spot, his chances for this award skyrocket. If Cam Thomas does the job he plans to, a whole new aspect of his overall game will open up for the 6-foot-3 shooting guard.
