California’s voter registration deadline for the 2024 elections is Monday. Here’s what you need to know.

With Election Day quickly approaching and just weeks away from November 5, there are several important deadlines that California voters should be aware of.

First, there’s the voter registration deadline on Monday, the last day for California residents to register by mail or online to vote in the 2024 presidential election. But if you miss that deadline, you can still register in person.

Here’s what you need to know about how to register and other important dates to add to your election calendar.

When is the last day to register to vote by mail or online in California?

California residents can register to vote online, by mail or in person by October 21. Those who wish to register in person can do so at your county elections office, or at a polling station or voting center.

To mail in a voter registration application, you can pick up the form at any elections office, post office, DMV office or public library. Forms can be dropped off at those locations or mailed to county elections offices, postmarked no later than Monday, October 21.

If I don’t register to vote by the October 21st deadline, can I still register to vote in person?

Yes. For Californians who have not registered online or by mail by October 21, same-day voter registration is available in person at county election offices, polling places or at voting centers from October 22 through Election Day.

Here you will find the contact information for your provincial elections office.

If you’re not sure if you’re already registered to vote, you can check your voter status here.

When were the ballots mailed out?

California is one of 39 states, along with Washington, D.C., which offers both early voting and mail-in ballots for all registered voters.

Provincial election offices had to be set up sending ballots by post for registered voters on October 7.

Mail-in ballots can be returned by mail or delivered to the nearest polling place or precinct. Voting locations opened on October 8. Use this tool to find the nearest voice drop-off location.

When is the last day I can mail in my ballot in California?

Mail-in ballots must be postmarked by Nov. 5 and received by county elections offices by Nov. 12.

When will the voting centers open so I can vote early?

Voter centers will be open for early in-person voting in all Voter’s Choice Act counties – including Alameda, Los Angeles, Marin, Orange, Placer, Riverside, Ventura and Sacramento, among others – starting Saturday, October 26.

When does early voting start for me if I don’t live in a Voter’s Choice Act county?

Consult your county elections office for information on early election dates, hours and voting locations. Voters in San Francisco County can find information about early voting and a list of polling places here. San Bernardino County voters can find that information here.

When is the last day to vote early in California?

California’s early voting period for both vote-by-mail and in-person options ends on November 4, the day before Election Day.

When is the last day to vote by mail? When should my ballot be postmarked?

Voters can return a ballot as long as it is postmarked on or before November 5. County elections offices must receive the ballot by Nov. 12.
