The Cal team of (left to right) Jonathan Irwanto, John Kim, Alex Aney, Derrick Chen, Carl Emil Overbeck, Mikey Wright, Timofey Stepanov, Ethan Schiffman, Ryder Jackson, Lucas Magnaudet, Alex Chang and (not pictured) Qian Sun received ITA awards this week for their work in the classroom. Five Bears also received individual ITA academic awards.

The 2023-24 California men’s tennis team was named to an ITA All-Academic Team and five Golden Bears – rising seniors Alex Chang, Derrick Chen And Mikey Wright and rising freshmen Alex Aney And Timofey Stepanov – claimed the ITA Scholar-Athlete award, the governing body of college tennis announced this week. It is the second consecutive ITA Scholar-Athlete honor for Wright and the first such honor for his four teammates. Cal has won the ITA team award for the third straight season.

To be named to the ITA All-Academic Team, a program must achieve a team grade point average of 3.2 or higher. To be named an ITA Scholar-Athlete, a student-athlete must maintain a GPA of at least 3.5 for the current academic year.

Cal was one of 176 NCAA Division I programs named to the ITA All-Academic Team, while the five Bears were among 1,059 NCAA Division I players named ITA Scholar-Athletes.

On Wednesday, Chang, Chen and Wright were also named to the Pac-12 Spring Academic Honor Roll for their work in the classroom this past year. In April, at the Cal Athletics Academic Honors Luncheon, the men’s tennis team won the Big C Society Most Improved GPA Award, and Chang received the Golden Bear Achievement Award for having the highest GPA on the team. Also in December, the men’s tennis team achieved a 100% Graduation Success Rate — based on a six-year cohort — for the eighth consecutive year.
