The two favorites for the Rookie of the Year award faced off on Friday as Caitlin Clark’s Indiana Fever defeated Angel Reese’s Chicago Sky 100-81.

Clark outscored Reese in the win, posting 31 points, 12 assists and four rebounds while making five three-pointers.

Clark set two records with the win: he passed Ticha Penicheiro for most games with 10 or more assists by a rookie in WNBA history with nine and became the first player in WNBA history with 23 or more points and 12 or more assists.

Reese finished with 10 points and 11 rebounds, also setting two records for most double-doubles by a rookie (23) and most rebounds by a rookie (399).

Clark likely had the edge over Reese going into the game, but after she outscored Reese for the win, fans officially declared the Rookie of the Year race over. Even Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James got in on the act over Clark’s performance.

This season, Clark is averaging 18 points, 8.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds, and her play has improved since returning from the Olympic break. While Clark is better this year, Reese is also having a strong year, averaging 13.3 points and 12.9 rebounds per game.

While the social media world will undoubtedly weigh in on the Rookie of the Year debate, Clark made it clear before the game that both she and Reese are focused on winning games.

“I think Angel and I would both give you the same answer,” Clark said when asked about the topic Friday, according to the Indianapolis Stars Evan Frank. “We don’t wake up and think about individual awards. I know you all think we do. I know we don’t. That’s what everyone wants to talk about. Our teams are both competing for a spot in the playoffs. That’s our main focus.”

With the win, Indiana improved to 16-16 on the year and is now tied with Phoenix Mercury for sixth place in the WNBA standings. The Sky dropped to 11-20 but are still in eighth place going into the playoffs.
