‘Burning family homes’ to come to Longsight if deal can be struck with Burnage bowls club

An old cricket club bowling green could become home to twenty new homes on East Road in Longsigh.

Members of Longsight Cricket Club voted to sell their bowling alley last year due to falling player numbers. The proceeds from the sale were reinvested in the club. It was bought by developers Views.

Views hopes to build three three-bedroom homes and 16 four-bedroom homes on the site, with senior development manager Patrick Sheridan saying the new plans will “deliver much-needed family housing to Longsight”. Each home will have a rear garden, a driveway with one parking space and secure bike storage, according to planning documents.

To mitigate the loss of the bowling alley, Views says it is working with Burnage Village bowling alley, two miles away, to help maintain it now that Longsight players are leaving.

“Before we can submit an application for planning permission, we need to formalise arrangements with Burnage Village Bowling Green to enable the club to flourish there and allow former Longsight players to continue to enjoy their sport,” added Mr Sheridan.

The current cricket clubhouse and social club, which remain open, were built in 2012 during a redevelopment of the site, but Longsight Cricket Club itself dates back to 1848.

A public consultation is underway on the redevelopment of Longsight Cricket Club, which is open until Monday 15 July. You can have your say online here.
