British Open: Si Woo Kim hits long hole-in-one in historic first at No. 17 at Royal Troon

Si Woo Kim hasn’t had the best week at Royal Troon. Now, however, he has a historic first in Scotland.

Kim made the first hole-in-one of this year’s British Open on Saturday morning. He hit his tee shot on the long, par-3 17th just short of the green, and the ball went perfectly up and in. It led to a big tee-off celebration for Kim, who said he didn’t see the ball drop.

“I wasn’t doing so well and I was feeling awful about my swing the last couple of days,” Kim said. “Then I finally hit the best swing I’ve ever hit this week. It’s going in and it makes me more special, especially at the major and the Open here.”

The hole-in-one was the first ever hit on the 17th hole of a British Open, and the longest ace in British Open history at 238 yards. according to Justin Ray of the Golf Channel.

Kim has won four times on the PGA Tour, most recently at the Sony Open in Hawaii last year. He is currently ranked No. 48 in the Official World Golf Rankings. Although he has missed the cut only once in 20 starts this season, Kim has only one top-10 finish.

Kim was 7-over on the week when he stepped to the 17th tee on Saturday. Although the hole-in-one dropped him back to even par on the day, he will still start Sunday at 5-over — which puts him out of contention and well behind Shane Lowry, who started Moving Day at 7-under.

“It was amazing,” Kim said. “I’ve made a lot of holes-in-ones in my life. Maybe 10-plus, in tournaments six to eight times, but I think this is the most memorable hole-in-one.”
