Breaking: Ryan Day States Ohio State is playing a big defensive star on offense this season, which could be their version of Travis Hunter

Ohio State head coach Ryan Day will have all the tricks up his sleeve this season because if he doesn’t find a way to win, he could be out the door, which means beating Michigan and going far in the College Football Playoff . On Tuesday, he said he has something that many Buckeye fans will love.

In January, true freshman safety Caleb Downs transferred from Alabama, where he was a key starter on a team that reached the playoffs. Ohio State got very lucky in landing the young player, and he should come in and take the defense to a new level. When they signed him five months ago, everyone thought he would only play defense, but there’s a chance you’ll see him in attack this season.

Ryan Day plays offense for Caleb Downs

Ohio State head football coach Ryan Day speaks with players during the first half of the LifeSports spring football game at Ohio Stadium on Saturday.

Ryan Day spoke to the media on Tuesday and stated that Caleb Downs has spent some time in the running back meetings, and they have talked about him making some offensive and safety plays.

Ohio State has the nation’s best running back duo of TreVeyon Henderson and Quinshon Judkins, so Downs will likely only see occasional snaps in some special packages. New offensive coordinator Chip Kelly has had packages in the past where he has three running backs in the backfield, so maybe Downs will be part of that, but teams are trying to find their version of Colorado’s Travis Hunter, and the Buckeyes may have just found there is.

Hunter is a starting cornerback and wide receiver for the Buffaloes and one of the best players in the country. He will most likely be one of the top ten picks in next year’s NFL Draft and is a game-changer on both sides of the ball; we also saw this a few years ago when Michigan safety Jabrill Peppers played offense and was a returner on special teams.

It will be fun to see Ryan Day call Down’s number when Ohio State is on offense. We’ll have to wait and see how it goes and whether we see it every game or just occasionally.
