Brandon Smith’s Brown Paper Bag, Matty Johns Interview, Sydney Roosters, Rugby League News

Roosters star Brandon Smith has quit the Sunday Night with Matty Johns panel after poking fun at the conspiracy theory surrounding the Sydney club.

Smith has had a tough time of it recently after being issued a notice of infringement and suspended for one match by the Roosters for missing a team meeting following the painful loss to North Queensland in Round 13.

The suspension has thrown his future at the club into doubt, but he has been able to put all the noise aside in recent weeks with strong performances on the field against the Bulldogs and Tigers.

Smith was handed the microphone following the Roosters’ 40-6 win over the Tigers, and the charismatic Rooster did not disappoint.

“Coach Trent Robinson, it’s his 300th game. Are we going to celebrate with some red wine at his house, how’s it all going to end?” asked former Roosters star Brian Fletcher.

“A couple of pizzas, a couple of reds and some brown paper bags. What do you want me to say?” Smith joked cheekily, referring to the wild conspiracy theory circulating that the Roosters are paying players extra money in brown paper bags to abuse the salary cap, or salary ‘sombrero’.

“Yes, reportedly,” Fletcher replied.

Smith played all but eight seconds against the Tigers after Joey Manu was injured.

Smith was meant to be given a spell to give Connor Watson minutes at hooker, but eight seconds after being substituted, Smith was back on the field for Manu.

Watson moved to the centre and Smith played the rest of the game in dummy half.

“You had to sit on the bench for eight seconds before you got back on, what was that like?” asked Nathan Hindmarsh.

“I probably couldn’t catch my breath, which was a shame, but I loved every second of those eight seconds, Hindy,” Smith said.

“Guys, you can do a lot in eight seconds. You can do a lot in eight seconds.”
