Boxer Roy Jones Jr. announces son DeAndre’s death by suicide

Roy Jones Jr.’s son, DeAndre Jones, has died. He was 32.

DeAndre died by suicide on Saturday, June 22, Roy Jr. confirmed. in a statement on Monday, June 24.

The boxing legend, 55, released a statement on Instagram informing the public of DeAndre’s death. “Sadly, my son DeAndre took his own life on Saturday,” Jones wrote.

“I am so grateful that God allowed me to come home Friday evening to spend the last night of his life with me and the family,” Jones continued.

“I know a lot of people are going through tough times right now, but nothing is worth taking your own life,” he wrote. “God gives it and God should be the one who takes it away.”

“Please respect our privacy as my family and I process this loss. Thank you for the love and support,” he concluded.

DeAndre was one of three children Roy Jr. shares with his wife Natlyn Jones. The couple is also parents to Roy III and DeShaun Jones.

Several people commented on the post expressing their condolences for the loss of the Jones family.

“My condolences brothera 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾,” wrote Martin Lawrence.

UFC champion Mike Swick wrote: “I was in a similar situation when I was young and feel your pain and confusion. I totally agree with you! Stay strong champ!! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻.”

“My deepest condolences brother, I am so sorry. I pray for your family. 🙏🏼,” wrote former boxer Amir Khan.

Roy Jr. is known as a world boxing champion who won in multiple weight classes, from lightweight to heavyweight. The celebrated boxer racked up 66 wins over his 29-year career, including 47 by knockout, according to Sky News.

He retired from boxing in February 2018, after 75 professional fights.
