Bournemouth v Southampton: Premier League – live | Premier League

Important events

It’s not an exaggeration to say that Russell Martin’s Southampton side are astonishing tonight. No attackers, but five on the bench, next to just one defender. Will Ryan Fraser, the 5ft4in Scottish dynamo, take the lead? Or will it be Maxwel Cornet, on loan from West Ham, who has not started a Premier League game since January, but is in the XI tonight. Aaron Ramsdale, perhaps less surprisingly, starts against his former team.

Bournemouth have tinkered a few things since their defeat at Anfield, but their squad is more or less as you would expect. Adam Smith comes into the squad for Araujo tonight and captains Bournemouth. What a servant the Englishman has been to the club. Evanilson, meanwhile, is still looking for his first Cherries goal.

Preamble

We are still very much in the honeymoon phase of 2024-2025: after a few dates there have been a few butterflies, a few nervous but excited looks and all we know at this stage is that we are eager to find out more. And in the case of Bournemouth and Southampton, there is a lot to learn: the home side are still in the process of replacing one expensive striker (Dominic Solanke) with another (Evanilson), as well as a new goalkeeper between the sticks (Kepa), while Southampton become a social experiment on how brave/stupid a football team can be if it keeps playing from the back. The Saints may still be the bookmakers’ favorites to be relegated, but they came incredibly close to their first win of the season last time out against Ipswich – have they turned a corner?

This may not be a traditional ripsnorter of a hookup/date, or particularly romantic, but there’s enough to keep us interested. Just don’t call Bournemouth-Southampton a derby.

Kick-off: 8pm BST.
