Veteran midfielder Boban Marjanović has signed a deal with Turkish team Fenerbahçe, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

According to Stein, the contract contains a clause that allows Marjanović to leave in December and sign with an NBA team if an opportunity arises.

The European basketball season runs concurrently with the NBA, so the timing of the opt-out clause could work to Marjanović’s advantage and against his new team. A return to the federation would be more likely if the 36-year-old plays regularly for Fenerbahçe, which could quickly need a new big man.

For now, it appears that Marjanović going overseas reflects a lack of NBA interest in Marjanović. He has played just 45 games for the Houston Rockets over the past two years, averaging 3.3 points, 2.0 rebounds and 0.1 blocks.

The Serbian has long attracted attention with his 2.23m stature and his height offers clear advantages on the pitch.

Marjanović has struggled to overcome his limitations, and it has kept him from being a consistent contributor in any of his six stops in his nine-year career so far. He can’t space the floor on offense, and he has a big target on his back as a defender to exploit in the pick-and-roll.

Even though he leaves the door open for the NBA, he may have made his final appearance in the league.
