Billiat emerges as big favourite in Zim’s PSL Golden Boot race

Khama Billiat proves he is not yet exhausted in Zimbabwe and is now a big favourite in the coveted PSL Golden Boot race.

He scored his seventh goal for Yadah FC in the 2023/24 season when they drew 1-1 with Hwange at The Heart Stadium on Saturday.

The 33-year-old is now one goal behind top scorer William Manondo of Caps United, making it easy to imagine him winning the coveted PSL Golden Boot race.

It is likely that he has played a pivotal role in the revival of Yadah FC as the club has been a relegation candidate since their promotion to the Zim Elite League in 2016.

The Harare club, owned by prominent prophet Walter Magaya, has always survived relegation on the final day of Zimbabwe’s PSL.

Last time out they finished the season in 14th position, two points above the relegation zone. This time around they seem to have more luck with Khama Billiat as the inspiration for the team. Evans Rusike, formerly of SuperSport United, has also been a key figure.

Khama Billiat proves once again that he is not yet exhausted in the Zimbabwe PSL and is now one of the hot favourites in the coveted PSL Golden Boot race.

On Saturday, the former Kaizer Chiefs forward scored after 30 minutes of play. However, they failed to defend their slender lead when Pritchard Mphelele equalised for Hwange on 86 minutes.

It remains to be seen how Billiat will fare for Yadah FC until the end of the season. He will be remembered for what he achieved in the DStv Premiership.

He won multiple trophies with Mamelodi Sundowns. These included three league titles. He also helped them win a CAF Champions League and a CAF Super Cup title.

On an individual level, he has won top awards including PSL Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season. He was voted Midfielder of the Season in 2016.

Billiat finished second behind Denis Onyango in the CAF African Player of the Year award in 2016, which is undoubtedly his best performance.

The former Sundowns player became the highest paid player in Zimbabwe, earning R90,000 while pocketing R280,000 in transfer fees.
