Berserk Volume 42 honors late creator Kentaro Miura

After manga artist Kentaro Miura passed away in 2021, the future of his epic dark fantasy series Berserk seemed uncertain. Thankfully, publisher Hakusensha and Miura’s lifelong friend Kouji Mori announced that Berserk would continue , and the first English-language paperback from Dark Horse Manga is now available for pre-order. While it’s still a while away, you can pick up Berserk Volume 42 for $15 on Amazon ahead of its March 2025 release.

The story of Berserk’s continuation is interesting, as prior to Miura’s death, Mori was entrusted with plans and thoughts from the Berserk creator himself. With additional material such as memos and character designs that Miura had left behind – and the secret of how Miura intended to end Berserk – Mori agreed to continue the series, promising: “I will only write the episodes that Miura talked about. I will not elaborate. I will not write episodes that I cannot remember clearly. I will only write the lines and stories that Miura described to me.”

If you haven’t read it yet, Berserk is hailed as one of the greatest manga series of all time. A brutal tale of swords, demons, and defying fate, it’s frequently cited as an influential work of art by people all over the world. The best way to keep up with the series is through the deluxe editions of the manga, many of which are currently on sale at Amazon for up to 40% off.

You can also check out the Berserk anime series, which exists in a variety of formats. There’s the original 1997 anime adaptation, which takes a few liberties with the source material but is still considered a timeless classic. It recently received a new Blu-ray release that upgrades the anime to 1080p, and this version comes with both English and Japanese dubs in addition to textless opening and closing credits.

The anime was remade later in the 2010s, and the Golden Age arc was also recently re-released on Blu-ray. This version received mixed reviews, as while the more modern animation was praised, the CG sequences were criticized for looking too robotic. Still, this adaptation sticks closer to the manga and is worth checking out if you want a more faithful adaptation.
