Ben Stokes makes ‘negativity’ jibe and sends out strong message after England vs Denmark draw at Euro 2024

Ben Stokes has suggested ‘negativity’ should be left to the experts after Thursday’s 1-1 draw between England and Denmark.

The Three Lions were poor for the second game in a row after working to a narrow 1-0 win over Serbia on matchday one.

Harry Kane put England ahead in the 18th minute, with the Bayern Munich star tapping in from close range after a deflected cross from Kyle Walker.

But Morten Hjulmand equalized for Denmark, who earned a point in Frankfurt after dominating the ball and having more shots on target.

After the match, Kyle Walker called for perspective. England have four points, are still undefeated and are well on course to reach the eighth finals.

And Stokes welcomed the Manchester City star’s interview, insisting ‘negativity’ should be left to the experts.

“Kyle Walker’s class interview… made everyone hear that they are at the top of the table, but know that there is still much more to improve,” he said.

“Get behind the team and leave the hindsight and negativity to the experts, yeah… come on ENGLAND.”

Alan Shearer was critical, with the BBC presenter saying the result and performance was ‘really worrying’ for the Three Lions.

“You can see players lying on their backs, they look absolutely shattered, there’s no excuse for that,” he said.

“No energy, no pace in the game. It was only in the last 10 to 15 minutes that we fell behind. We were caught with the ball too many times, too many sloppy passes.

“And in reality Denmark was the better team and deserved to win. There is so much more to come. It’s really worrying.”

And Shearer believes Southgate should brace himself for ‘serious questions’ after England’s subdued performance.

“Gareth Southgate will be asked serious questions,” he said.

“You see the players there… Phil Foden and what he has done for Manchester City all season, Jude Bellingham coming on in the first game and tonight not so much, John Stones and what we have seen him do at club level.

“There is a lot more to get out of these players than he is getting at the moment.

“Gareth is not getting the best out of England’s best players at the moment.”

As for Roy Keane, the ITV pundit has attacked Trent Alexander-Arnold, saying the Liverpool star ‘can’t cope’ after problems in midfield.

“If you’ve been taken off the pitch in the two games it’s not a good sign,” Keane said.

“I have always found it a huge gamble to play against a player who does not play for his club week in, week out.

“I know people say he’s coming to Liverpool. But drifting into a position and starting is completely different.

“I’ve played in midfield, it’s a difficult position. Physically you have to distance yourself and he fell short in the two games.

“It’s not just him. You should probably put this on Gareth (Southgate).

“It’s a huge gamble to throw a full-back into the middle of the park.

“This is not against the French or the Spanish, where they have tougher tests ahead of them, and perhaps even against Germany.

“This is against two teams where you thought England would be quite comfortable and have a lot of possession.

“But it was a big ask for him and he is not prepared for it.”
