Bayern 1-1 Leverkusen

Vincent Kompany’s Bayern Munich maintained their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season after a 1-1 draw with champions Bayer Leverkusen at the Allianz Arena, although the Bavarians later lost Harry Kane to injury.

The match will be best remembered for two spectacular long-range shots in the first half, when Robert Andrich first opened the scoring just past the half-hour mark after Granit Xhaka’s dismissal, before drilling a low shot into the bottom corner past a helpless Manuel Neuer . .

That goal came completely against the rules, although it didn’t take long for Munich to equalize after another moment of brilliance, this time from Aleksandar Pavlovic, who beat Lukas Hradecky with a descending first-time volley from 25 yards out.

The home side dominated thereafter and were inches away from taking the lead at the start of the second period when Kane’s clever pass found Serge Gnabry in space at the back post, only for the German striker’s first attempt to hit the inside of the post hit, before punching the rebound off the top of the crossbar.

Bayern continued to push for a winner but saw Kane, who was largely anonymous throughout after failing to score a single chance in a league match for the first time in more than three years, limp off late with a leg injury in what will happen later. A concern for both Kompany – whose team visits Aston Villa in the Champions League on Tuesday – and interim England manager Lee Carsley.

Serge Gnabry even comes so close to giving Bayern Munich the lead in the second half when he sees his shot hit the post and his follow-up hit the crossbar.

Leverkusen will be the luckier of the two teams, however, as Xabi Alonso’s champions trail the leaders by just three points after the first five games of the season.
