Basketball school teams push for free student entry at FIBA Asia Cup U-18

The Sri Lanka Basketball Federation faced backlash after charging Rs. 600 for entry to the FIBA Asia Cup Under-18 tournament, including from schoolchildren. The decision resulted in several disappointed students walking out of the Sugathadasa Stadium.

Basketball schools have voiced strong complaints, claiming that such allegations hamper the promotion of the sport among youth. They argue that free admission for schoolchildren would encourage more interest and participation in basketball. Critics argue that the federation should prioritize promoting the sport rather than focusing on revenue.

“You need about Rs 10,000 to take a school basketball team to a match. This is not the way to promote the sport as many schools cannot afford it,” said a senior basketball coach.

To ensure future growth and engagement, it is in the best interest of the sport to offer free admission to students and encourage the next generation of basketball players.
