Barcelona are ‘one of THREE European giants monitoring Mason Greenwood’ after the striker’s blistering start to the season following a £30m summer move to Marseille

  • The former England international left Man United last summer
  • Was arrested in 2022 for alleged attempted rape, sexual assault and coercive behavior
  • Greenwood has scored five goals and provided one assist in his first four games for the French club

Barcelona are one of ‘three European powers keeping an eye on Mason Greenwood’ as the Marseille striker attracts interest after a blistering start to the season.

Greenwood completed a £30million move from Manchester United to the French side in July, following a season-long loan spell at Getafe. However, the move was marred by controversy.

The attacker was arrested in January 2022 on charges of attempted rape, assault and coercive behaviour. The charges were later dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service following the ‘withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light’.

However, Marseille fans still had their reservations, with mayor Benoit Payan publicly speaking out against Greenwood’s arrival last summer.

Now it appears the Englishman is on the verge of a move again as his performances, which have seen him score five goals and provide one assist in just four games, have attracted interest from some of the continent’s top clubs, reports TalkSport.

Champions League challengers Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich have all reportedly sent scouts to watch the 22-year-old in action in the south of France, and were reportedly impressed with what they saw.

Spanish clubs are believed to have first started keeping tabs on the forward in late 2023 after his performances for Getafe earned him plaudits.

Greenwood ultimately scored ten goals and provided six assists in his first season after his arrest.

German giants Bayern have been keeping an eye on the Marseille player of late, possibly with a view to him teaming up with fellow countryman Harry Kane in Bavaria.

Last week, the French club’s president Pablo Longoria said that Roberto de Zerbi had asked to sign Greenwood during his first meeting with the board after being appointed manager in June.

Speaking at the Thinking Football Summit, he said the following about the decision: ‘We took the decision internally.

“Okay, there was some opposition, that was objective, but at the same time it gave us the power to maybe not investigate, because I’m not a judge, but to use all the information to make the best decision. And I think we did that.”

Greenwood has largely kept a low profile in the media since leaving United but beamed when he was named the club’s star player of the month after an impressive start to life in France.

“This is my first month here and it’s great to win this award. First of all, I want to thank the fans who voted for me. I really appreciate it,” he told Marseille’s official X account.

“Without my teammates and the coaching staff and everyone at the club who helped me, this award would not have been possible. I came here in the middle of pre-season and immediately got a good connection and we showed that in the first game against Brest.

“We are getting more and more comfortable as the games go on, we are in a good position in the league and want to keep moving forward. It is amazing that I have never experienced such a crowd before, I have played in many stadiums in Europe and this was the loudest,” he added.

Only Man City’s Erling Haaland has scored more than Greenwood in Europe’s top five leagues and the former England international will be hoping to add to his impressive tally when his side take on Lyon at the Groupama Stadium on Sunday.
