Badminton star M. Thinaah receives Chery Omoda 5 – 30% discount for Olympic semi-finalists

Malaysian badminton star Thinaah Muralitharan has been presented with a Chery Omoda 5. Chery Malaysia posted photos of the 26-year-old Klang-born athlete – who along with her partner Pearly Tan had us all on the edge of our seats at the recent Olympics – posing with the black SUV.

“Olympic badminton sensation Thinaah Muralitharan has just bagged a new Omoda 5, and we couldn’t be more excited! Her outstanding performances on the court this year, especially at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, truly reflect the same spirit of excellence and elegance that the Omoda 5 embodies,” said Chery Malaysia.

“We are grateful to welcome Thinaah Muralitharan to the Chery family and hope her adventures are more exciting than ever. As she scales new heights on and off the field,” the caption added.

Thinaah joins Team MAS badminton players Aaron Chia, Soh Wooi Yik and Lee Zii Jia to receive new Chery SUVs upon their return from Paris. Men’s doubles duo Aaron and Wooi Yik, as well as singles star LZJ each received a Tiggo 7 Pro for winning bronze medals. This was part of Chery Malaysia’s promise to provide free cars to medal winners.

Thinaah’s Omoda 5 doesn’t come for free, however, as she and Pearly lost to Japan’s Matsuyama-Shida in the bronze medal match. At the awards ceremony last month, Chery announced a 30% discount for Paris 2024 medalists and semi-finalists (the latter including Pearly-Thinaah and weightlifter Aniq Kasdan) and a 15% discount for other athletes competing in the Games.

Powered by a 1.5-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 156PS/230Nm, the Chery Omoda 5 is priced at RM99,800 for the C variant and RM118,800 for the top-of-the-range H model. The latter adds extras such as a power-adjustable driver’s seat, ventilated front seats, a hands-free power tailgate, a power sunroof, speed limit assist, traffic sign recognition and a 360-degree camera.
