Baby boomers star in terrifying scenes ahead of Paris

Dante Exum struggled with an injury and Josh Giddey topped the scoring with 19 points as the Australian Boomers easily defeated Puerto Rico.

Basketball: Andrew Bogut says Australia’s goal is to survive the group stage of the Olympic Games.

Exum suffered an awkward fall late in the first quarter after driving to the paint, colliding with teammate Duop Reath and appearing to hurt his neck as he fell to the ground with a grimace.

The guard grabbed him by the neck and remained on the ground for a while while he was treated by a trainer and surrounded by some teammates. He sat out the rest of the game as a precaution due to neck soreness.

Exum has battled injuries throughout his career, and when he’s on the field this hard, it’s cause for concern, especially right before the Boomers’ opening game at the Paris Olympics.

The 29-year-old played the NBA season through June for the Dallas Mavericks and played against the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals.

Giddey continued his promising form in the exhibition games with 19 points, four rebounds and five assists and only one turnover.

The Chicago Bulls’ new guard led five Boomers in double figures, including Patty Mills (15 points, 5-of-5 3-pointers), Jock Landale (12 points, six rebounds), Joe Ingles (11, 3-of-3 3-pointers) and Josh Green (10 points).

Basketball: In promising signs for Australia, the Boomers routed Team USA in their pre-Olympic hit-out, going down fighting in a 98-92 loss

Jack McVeigh, who signed a two-way contract with the Houston Rockets this week, scored nine points and Dyson Daniels added five points, three rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block.

Reath, who has not been in the Australian squad for the last three games, played as a reserve for Landale, challenging Will Magnay for the reserve role. The lopsided win was a good chance for Brian Goorjian to move deeper on the bench.

It continued the Boomers’ promising preparation for the real thing after challenging the US and defeating Serbia.

Australia will play their final friendly on Monday at 5am against hosts France and twin tower stars Victor Wembanyama and Rudy Gobert before kicking off the season in earnest against Spain on 27 July.
