Matthews was on the ice Thursday with CCM, a manufacturer of hockey equipment and supplier of skates, and he skated around with the new “C” on his left shoulder.

CCM has been supplying hockey gear to Matthews for some time, but this was the first time the Leafs player had been spotted on the ice wearing the new look.

It should be noted that the jersey being worn appears to have the old Adidas look, as evidenced by the dimples across the shoulder. The NHL has switched jersey suppliers to Fanatics as of this season. The overall look of the Leafs jersey itself is the same as the old one.

The first American-born captain in Maple Leafs history, Matthews became the new leader at an unveiling ceremony on Wednesday. Previous captain John Tavares presented Matthews with the new Leafs jersey, replacing the “C” he had worn for the past five years.

In eight NHL seasons, Matthews has accomplished so much in a short time. With 368 goals and 281 assists in 562 games, the star forward won the Hart Trophy for league MVP for the first time after the 2021-22 season. He has won the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy three times for leading the league in goals and set another new Leafs record last season with 69 in a season.

Matthews also won the Calder Trophy, given annually to the top rookie when he scores 40 goals and has 29 assists in 2016-17. He also led the NHL in even-strength goals that season with 32.
