ATP Shanghai day 4 predictions including Rune vs Berrettini

Holger Rune and Matteo Berrettini clashed two months ago in Cincinnati, and now they meet at ATP Shanghai. It’s a brutal draw for both, with the Italian representing a much higher level of play than his ranking suggests (when healthy). Who do you think will come out on top?

ATP Shanghai Day 4 Predictions

Karen Khachanov vs. Marcos Giron

Head to head: First meeting

This hasn’t been an easy season for Karen Khachanov, but it looks like he could have got something going in Beijing, where only Carlos Alcaraz stopped him in the quarterfinals (and that first set was quite hard-fought). It’s pretty hard to guess how his dynamic with Marcos Giron will work out and it’s surprising that they haven’t met yet. While both play a fairly high percentage style, it’s still Khachanov who should have a much higher ceiling once he finally starts to gain confidence in his game.
Prediction: Khachanov in 3

Alexei Popyrin vs. Miomir Kecmanovic

Head to head: Kecmanovic 3-1

Miomir Kecmanovic really liked this match, but they haven’t played each other since 2021. Nowadays it is Alexei Popyrin who made a big impression recently and will look to keep the momentum of Montreal/US Open going. That opening round loss to Tomas Machac in Tokyo shouldn’t bother him too much considering how well the Czech played throughout the event. The form is enough to earn Popyrin favorite status here, but he will have to resist the temptation to try and break Kecmanovic with too much emphasis on conservative patterns.
Prediction: Popyrin in 3

Taylor Fritz vs. Terence Atmane

Head to head: First meeting

Terence Atmane repeats his run from last year, when he also qualified and won his opening round in the main draw. Now the question becomes whether he can beat a seed this time. Taylor Fritz’s loss to Arthur Fils in Tokyo looks much better in retrospect after the Frenchman won the title. The absolute top version of Atmane’s game could bother him with all the Frenchman’s weaponry, potentially leaving him reaching for balls. But the most likely version is that the underdog keeps it relatively close with his serve and that’s it.
Prediction: Fritz in 2

Holger Rune vs. Matteo Berrettini

Head to head: Rune 2-1

This was a blockbuster match early in the Cincinnati event and it is no different here. Matteo Berrettini was forced to retire in Tokyo last week, but it appears he is now doing well health-wise following the win over Christopher O’Connell. But this is a competition with small margins and maybe Holger Rune can turn fitness into some sort of advantage (even if it’s rare for it to work that way for the Dane)? After all, he still has all the tools necessary to continue making progress and just needs stabilization to get things together.
Prediction: Rune in 3
