Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone condemned supporters who hurled objects at Real Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, but felt the Belgian played his part in provoking the crowd.

Courtois turned to the Atletico fans and celebrated after Eder Militao had given the visitors the lead just after the hour mark at the Metropolitano Stadium.

The supporters reacted angrily at Courtois and pelted several objects at him, including lighters and a plastic bag.

As a result, referee Mateo Busquets suspended the game and forced both teams to leave the field.

In an attempt to calm the Atletico supporters, Simeone and some of his players, including captain Koke and Jose Maria Gimenez, asked them to stop misbehaving.

Fortunately, the home fans were pleased when Angel Correa scored a dramatic late equalizer which was initially ruled out but later overturned by VAR as the match finished 1-1.

But the incident involving Courtois undeniably overshadowed the match.

After the match, Simeone said it had to be a joint effort from everyone involved to avoid similar scenes in the future.

“We all have to help,” Simeone told DAZN.

‘If we provoke people, they get angry. You can celebrate a goal, but not by looking at the stands, taunting and making gestures.

“It’s not justified, but neither was what followed.”

Koke added via DAZN: ‘It was an exciting moment. But this cannot happen on a football field.

‘We are professionals and we have to know where we are and be smart, but the other incidents cannot happen.

‘Players have to be smart. According to protocol, if the incident were to repeat itself, the match would be over.”

The result maintained both sides’ unbeaten starts to the 2024/25 LaLiga season, with Real Madrid sitting second with 18 points, while Atletico Madrid are third with 16 points.

Barcelona led the Spanish top flight with 21 points from eight games, but suffered their first defeat of the season in a shock 4-2 loss to Osasuna on Saturday.
