New Champions League format

This season, the Champions League has undergone a major overhaul, moving away from the traditional 32-team format divided into eight groups of four, and introducing a single table of 36 teams, the ‘League stage’.

Main changes in the format

Some ranking: The 36 teams are now placed in a single table. Each club plays eight different opponents, four at home and four away, instead of two times against three opponents in a group stage.

Sowing and pulling process: The teams were divided into four seeding pots, with each club playing two opponents from each pot: one at home and one away.

Qualification for knockout rounds:

  • The top eight teams from the league phase automatically advance to the last 16.
  • Teams ranked 9th through 24th compete in a two-leg play-off round for the remaining spots in the last 16.
  • Teams finishing in 25th place or lower are eliminated from European competition altogether and do not progress to the Europa League.

Knockout rounds: From the last 16 onwards, matches will be played according to the traditional knockout rounds.
