Argentine handball player proposes to girlfriend during 2024 Olympics

Even before she defeated Team USA at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, Argentine hockey player Maria Campoy had an unforgettable moment.

On Wednesday, July 24, her boyfriend Pablo Simonet, a player for the Argentine handball team, had an important question for her.

As Argentina’s handball and hockey teams took a group photo together in their white and blue uniforms with the River Seine in the background, Simonet, 32, broke away from the group, got down on one knee and proposed to Campoy, 34,.

In a video shared on the handball player’s Instagram page, Campoy, who is playing for the Argentina women’s hockey team this week, can be seen breaking down in tears as she and her fiancé embrace, while both Argentine teams cheer and jump around in the background.

“The woman in my life gave me a ‘yes’ 🤩 ❤️,” Simonet wrote in Spanish in the caption of his post on Wednesday. “In a dream place, where everything came from and where we fought so hard.”

“Thank you friends and a few accomplices for making this special and letting us have this forever. Paris is always a good idea 💍❤️ 👰 ♀️🤵🏻 ♂️,” he ended the post, before tagging his fiancée.

Many fans, fellow athletes and others commented on Simonet’s post and sent congratulations to the engaged couple after the proposal.

“Forever a fan of this adorable couple 🫶🫶🫶,” Campoy’s former hockey teammate Rochy Sanchez wrote in Spanish. “I love you guys ❤️. I hope you’re very happy, as much as you are now ❤️.”

Simonet’s handball teammate Lucas Moscariello also sent the pair a well-wishes: “The looooove!! Congratulations boys 🫶🇦🇷.”

“Olympic rings and engagement rings!🙌💍,” reads Peacock’s official comments section.

According to the official Olympic website, Simonet and Campoy have been together since 2015 and even attended the Olympic Games together, when they both competed in Rio in 2016.

Although the Argentina handball team struggled against Norway on Saturday, July 27, losing 36-31, the Las Leonas women’s hockey team won big against the USA the same day, beating Team USA 4-1.

According to the Olympic Games website, the hockey team will play against South Africa on Monday, July 29, and will compete for the gold medal, after previously winning silver at the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

The Olympics also reported that Campoy may retire from hockey at the end of the 2024 Games, as she did not compete in the 2020 Olympics and decided to compete in one last competition this year.

“Of course the doors were open, but I was living my life (in Spain),” Campoy told the outlet. “But after the phone call, I didn’t hesitate. I talked to Pablo and told him, ‘I want to end my career in the best possible way.'”
