Ape’s Top 10 of the Month: September 2024

Welcome to Ape to Gentleman’s Top 10 of the Month feature. We’ve gathered the most important trends, insights and advice to help you live your best life.

In this episode, we’ve selected 10 essential topics covering everything from luxury hotel openings and next-generation projectors to style inspiration for the transitional season. Whether you’re looking for inspiration for a wardrobe overhaul, looking to improve your grooming routine, or simply looking for the best and latest releases, we’ve got you covered.

Let’s take a look at how we can make September our most stylish, successful, and fulfilling month yet.

Martin Valen

It’s exciting to see new names in the streetwear and sneaker world playing with classic shapes and silhouettes. One such brand that has caught our attention lately is Martin Valen. The brand is sturdy, comfortable and has a progressive approach to fashion. It has an Axel Arigato feel to it in the way it plays with the contemporary.

The two-tone high trainers and white chunky high-tops are our picks from the current collection. There are plenty of clothing options too, with the oversized, cosy velcro hoodie being a standout.

Nike X Hyperice Recovery

We love recovery tech, whether it’s cold-water plunge pools or massage guns, and Nike’s upcoming collaboration with recovery experts Hyperice is right up our alley.

The first consists of a high boot and a vest. The first provides warmth and dynamic air compression massage for the feet, while the vest provides direct heating or cooling, allowing athletes to reach their optimal body temperature.

Olympic pentathlon gold medal machine Nafe Thiam is a fan. Public availability is tipped for a later date.

Equiano Ominira Rum

The release of the limited edition Equiano Ominira (only 3,000 bottles available) feels like a moment for rum as a super-premium spirit. The first Equiano legacy blend – the brand names it after writer and abolitionist Olaudah Equiano – combines a rare blend of African and Caribbean rums, overseen by award-winning master blender Richard Seale.

The result is one of the best rums we’ve tried in years. It’s smooth, with hints of dark chocolate and caramel before the spicy finish. Anything that isn’t on the rocks is a disservice.

Samsung Premier 9 Projector

If you’re serious about your home theater experience and are looking for a big-budget alternative to your TV, Samsung’s next-generation laser projectors are for you.

The Premier 9 and 7 short throw projectors combine stunning 4k resolution, immersive audio and advanced connectivity and features. Central to the projectors’ appeal is instant installation (simply plug in and connect to a network), making for a sleek, minimalist unit that has the potential to completely transform a room.

The US and Canada will get the chance first, but a UK launch is expected later this year.

Wolves

There are movies to challenge, and there are movies to immerse yourself in, like the comfort of a warm, relaxing bath. Oh look, there’s Brad Pitt and George Clooney, the silver foxes of the people.

Wolfs follows both in an action-comedy style as they realize that they have both been hired as fixers to cover up a major crime. Now the two must work together to get the job done.

An Ocean’s Eleven for two? Mr. and Mr. Smith? Call it what you will, but what’s certain is that it’s got the feel of a film that can solve a midweek streaming doom scroll with a single click when it hits Apple TV+ later this month.

Joshua vs Dubois, Wembley

In case you missed it, boxing is back in full force. The right fights are happening, arenas are selling out, and the next generation of breakout stars is starting to emerge. On September 21, Anthony Joshua will take on Daniel Dubois for the IBF World Heavyweight Championship, winning one of the biggest cards of the year.

Popular narrative suggests that a Joshua win could set up the long-awaited Tyson Fury bout, but Dubois will be no pushover. The Saudi-backed Riyadh Season nights are also partly focused on an exciting undercard with Buatsi, Sheeraz and knockout favourite Chamberlain all set to fight.

King & Tuckfield AW24

It was the appreciation for the work and curatorial expertise of model Richard Biedul that ultimately led us to the first King & Tuckfield collection in 2016.

The brand’s ability to translate founder Stacy’s grandparents’ stylish vignettes – shaped by memories and family photo albums – into wearable collections is what sets the clothes apart. All whimsical, nostalgic style, but with contemporary accents.

AW24 offers plenty of that, with extra dynamic, oversized pleats, draped pleats and reverse stripes.

Hyde Hotel, London

Hotelier Ennismore is making its UK hotel debut with the £34m transformation of a Grade II listed building a stone’s throw from St Paul’s. Hyde Hotel will feature 111 luxury bedrooms, a ground-floor modern Turkish restaurant and Black Lacquer, a subterranean cocktail bar offering clean serves and Tokyo small plates.

Occupying a subtly central location, the boutique hotel is a welcome contender for the central London hotel sector, with the stylish renovation of a classic space.

Drake’s Fall Transition Lookbook

Few things in life hit like a Drake lookbook. Even better is a transitional lookbook: not jumping straight into the new season, but a gradual easing in.

Described as “summer into… not quite summer and finally fall”, it’s a masterclass in layering for when the sun starts to disappear behind the clouds and the evenings outside with a beer get colder.

Headlining pieces include signature Games apparel, soft-shouldered tweeds and a full collection of Scottish wool vests.

BOSS AW24

For AW24, BOSS played the ultimate cheat code: putting David Beckham in a suit. A surefire way to pique our interest. Further investigation reveals that Nigerian musician Burna Boy and South Korean actor Lee Jong-Suk are also involved in a campaign that kicks off the season’s trend of power tailoring, trench coats and big shoulders.

The trousers are still not slim, have a regular fit and there is a beautiful, blocky, double-breasted jacket to complete the look.
