Andy Murray withdraws from Wimbledon singles but will still play doubles with brother Jamie

Andy Murray has withdrawn from the Wimbledon singles tournament, which will be his last appearance at the championship, after failing to recover from surgery on a cyst in his spine just over a week ago.

Murray, 37, released a statement through his camp on Tuesday morning: “Unfortunately, despite Andy having worked incredibly hard on his recovery since his surgery just over a week ago, he has made the very difficult decision not to compete in singles this year.

“As you can imagine he is hugely disappointed but he has confirmed he will be playing doubles with Jamie and he is looking forward to competing for the last time at Wimbledon.”

Murray was due to face rising Czech star Tomas Machac on Centre Court in the final part of the day, but the week’s training has not yet brought him to the level he feels he needs to compete. That means as much, if not more, to him than just playing.

If anyone deserved a proper send-off, it was Andy Murray. Unfortunately, things don’t work that way. Too bad for him.

Murray, a two-time Wimbledon champion (2013 and 2016), played his last singles match at the championship in 2023, when he lost to Greece’s Stefanos Tsitsipas in five sets over two days on Centre Court.
