Despite his great love for tennis, Andy has realised that his body is no longer able to support the strain that professional sport requires. The former Scottish champion had hoped to play singles at the Wimbledon Championships and the Olympic Games in Paris, but a back injury forced him to make another decision.

The three-time Grand Slam champion underwent delicate back surgery just before the Wimbledon Championships, during which he played only doubles with his brother JapieMurray also had a great time at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where he joined forces with Dan Evans.

Murray is a legend

The last five years have been very complicated for the former world number 1, who has continued to work hard despite knowing that he would never reach the level he used to. The Scot has become an example of resilience and self-sacrifice for young ATP tour talents and has found a way to bring his great career to a worthy end. Former WTA star speaks to Eurosport Laura Robson commented on Murray’s latest Olympic experience: “His experience this week was a guy… there’s an athlete from Liechtenstein and he went all over the village, all over the place, trying to find this poor guy. He tracked him down, he got it, and it was like he’d won the Olympic gold. To be honest, he came in and showed everyone, ‘Look what I’ve got! It’s a bit unfair in a way, because it’s a competition and because he’s Andy Murray, everyone wants to give him a pin. He’s got an unfair (advantage), it’s a bit unfair!”

Recently, Dave Haggerty – ITF President – paid tribute to Andy: “Sir Andy Murray has lived and breathed the values of tennis throughout his long careerchampion of equality and helping to spread the message that our sport is for everyone. We will of course remember his two Olympic gold medals, his Grand Slam victories and his never-give-up attitude on the court. We will also remember his Davis Cup victory with Great Britain in 2015, helping his team win their first title since 1936. Although this wonderful chapter of his career is now drawing to a close, we know that Sir Andy’s love of tennis will ensure he remains involved in helping our sport grow and develop globally.”

The former world number 1 has beaten the Big 3 on multiple occasions and has taken away much of the satisfaction, such as the 3 Grand Slam titles and two gold medals at the Olympic Games (in London 2012 and Rio 2016). Injuries have prevented Murray from staying at the top for longer, but the Scot will not regret it.

24-time Grand Slam champion and former world number 1 Novak Djokovic Murray also praised: “The first time I met Andy I was 12. We’ve known each other for a long time. We were never too close on tour because it’s hard, you’re rivals. We always had a huge amount of respect for each other, shared the stage, like, for many, many years.

I think there’s only a week’s age difference. Our paths to the professional tour and the top of the men’s game are pretty similar. I mean, there wasn’t much difference between our careers. We’ve played some incredible matches all over the worldfinals of different Grand Slams – all the Grand Slams actually. I played against him in finals of all the Grand Slams, which I think is the only player I’ve faced in finals of all the Grand Slams. Maybe Rafa. I’m not sure. He’s definitely one of the three guys, besides Roger and Rafa, who really had a big impact on my career and my growth as a tennis player.”

The former world number 1 has always enjoyed playing outside the tennis court and was considered one of the funniest players on the ATP tour. The former Scottish champion should stay in touch with tennis and help younger players grow up healthy. The hope of the fans is to see him happy and serene in the coming years.
