Andrey Rublev records an amazing statistic

Andrey Rublev was going through one of the worst moments of his career, before reaching the final of the Montreal Masters 1000 this week. The Russian has fully exploited the many absences in Canada, caused mainly by the Olympics in Paris.

The Canadian Open had to take the foregone share of champions like Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, who took a few days off after the amazing Olympic final. Andrey found the right pace as the days passed, raised his level and beat world number 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinals making a difference in the third set.

The victory against the Italian gave great confidence to Rublev, who dominated against Matteo Arnaldi in the semi-final. The Moscow tennis player played a great match against the Italian – who had beaten him at the French Open this year – proving to have overcome the most difficult period of the season.

Andrey will face the Australian Alexei Popyrin today to win his third Masters 1000 after triumphs at Montecarlo 2023 and Madrid 2024. The Russian will start favored against the Australian ace, who has no experience at these levels. Rublev will have to be good at managing the tension and nerves against an opponent who can go on the court without having anything to lose. Andrey Rublev needs to find serenity in view of the US Open, the last Grand Slam of the season, where he could get a great result.

Meanwhile, the Russian ace is the only player since 2021 able to reach three Masters 1000 finals on both red clay and hard courts (Montecarlo 2021, Cincinnati 2021, Montecarlo 2023, Shanghai 2023, Madrid 2024 and Montreal 2024).

Rublev is playing a great tennis in Canada: “Today was a completely different match. With Jannik, I had nothing to lose. I knew the only way to beat him was to play a certain way, I had no other option. So, if I wanted to win the match, I was forced to play that way. Today was different because there was more pressure.

It seemed like I had more chances to win, even though Matteo is a great player and defeated me last time. Everything was different, the playing style because there was a lot of wind today. He likes to disrupt the rhythm, play many slice shots and lobs, and then suddenly hit very hard out of nowhere and counterattack. It’s tough when players don’t give you rhythm; you have to be very focused.”

The Russian is working hard to overcome this difficult moment: “It’s a difficult question because I also need that advice. The only thing I hope to learn and that I would have liked to learn when I was younger is to do everything consciously. Like every decision you make or every feeling you have, be aware of that, where it’s coming from exactly, why, and be aware that it’s your decision.

Most people put something in your head, and you think that way, but you don’t understand that it’s not really your opinion because you’re being educated that way. So, be conscious of every step, every feeling you experience to make sure it’s yours because when you live life as you would like, you feel much better. Otherwise, it would be like living a sort of lie to yourself. That’s why we all start to suffer from something because deep down we understand that something is wrong, but we don’t want to accept it.”

The Russian ace feels better

The Russian ace decided to skip the Paris Olympics to regain the right feelings and work on himself. Andrey hasn’t done much in the last few months, but the run in Canada could change his season.

The Mutua Madrid Open champion has been furious on the court this year: “Mentally I was out of order. I don’t know how you can say it. I was struggling with everything. I guess it was already long moment of everything, and I started to burn out because I was struggling for many years with depression, with many things outside of the court.

I guess this year is when I couldn’t handle it anymore, and it starts to just explode. It started to explode more and more on the court because in life I was able to stay calm, but inside the court I was burning everything. In the end, yeah, I was struggling. Now last months I feel really good, and straight away tennis is better.”

The hope of fans and insiders is that Rublev has finally defeated his demons and can express his best tennis in the coming months.
