Andrew Garfield Responds to Rumor He’s in Spider-Man 4

Oscar-nominated actor Andrew Garfield has responded to a rumor that he’s returning to play Spider-Man in Sony Pictures and Marvel’s next Spider-Man film.

Speaking to IndieWire, Garfield didn’t outright say no. Instead, he danced around the issue, much like he did years ago when asked over and over again if he’d star in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Of course, Garfield did end up starring in No Way Home, alongside Tobey Maguire and Tom Holland. For the next Spider-Man film, Garfield said people should question what they read on the internet.

“I mean, the Internet is a big place,” Garfield said. “I think there’s a lot of people who will just say whatever they want to get clicks. So you may have been scammed, I’m afraid.”

In July, Marvel boss Kevin Feige said that the script for the next Spider-Man film is still in the works and that a draft version should be ready “relatively soon.” Rumors quickly started that Garfield would return alongside Maguire and Holland to play three Spider-Men, just as they did in No Way Home.

In April, Holland himself commented on the future of the series, saying that a team of “the best in the business” is currently coming up with ideas for “whatever the story is” for another film. Holland said he is wary of protecting the legacy of the series.

“Until we crack it, we have a legacy to protect,” he said. “The third film was so special in so many ways that we have to make sure we do the right thing.”

Holland previously said he considered walking away from Spider-Man and passing the baton to someone else to play the character. But Holland is willing to come back for another film, if the story is good enough.

“Whether we can find a way to do the character justice is another matter. I feel very protective of Spider-Man. I feel very, very fortunate that we were able to work on a franchise that got better with every movie, that got more successful with every movie, which I think is really rare, and I want to protect his legacy,” Holland said in 2023. “So I’m not going to make another one just to make another one. It’s got to be worthwhile for the character.”

Holland has appeared in three major Spider-Man films to date, including Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017), Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019), and Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021). Holland has also played Spider-Man in multiple Avengers films.

In addition to Holland’s next Spider-Man film, there is also a Spider-Woman film in the works, which will be released “sooner than you might expect.”
