Andrei Rublev had shocking words about the fight against depression

Over the past few months, Andrei Rublev has had some outrageous reactions on court (such as injuring himself with his racket) and appeared to be in real trouble. Not considering the human side of an athlete by thinking that all athletes are robots is one of the biggest mistakes a fan can make.

After the important victory achieved against Jannik Sinner in MontrealThe Russian has decided to talk openly about a very delicate subject: his battle with depression. A battle that he also tries to overcome through tennis.

“I feel great and I’m happy that I won both matches today. I beat two strong players and I won against Jannik. For me it’s a special moment, because I’ve been struggling a lot the last months. I needed this match to prove to myself that I can achieve great results. So I’m really happy,” he said.

“I wasn’t feeling well mentally, I don’t know how to say that. Off the track it wasn’t always like that, but those were tough years, in which I also struggled with depression and I slowly couldn’t handle it anymore. At one point I exploded – especially on the track – and I couldn’t handle anything anymore.

That’s what happened. I started feeling a bit better in the last few weeks and you can see that in my tennis now. I don’t know if this is the best win, but after Madrid it is definitely the best of the season so far.

Two matches in one day? It’s not easy. But we know that’s part of our sport. We can’t do anything about it. We can’t control the weather. We always have to play in different conditions. I think that’s what makes tennis special. We didn’t play yesterday, so there’s no point in thinking about the two matches today. I was lucky that I didn’t play a long match against Brandon Nakashima in the morning,” he analyzed.
