Andrea Petkovic lashes out at those who find Jannik Sinner’s tennis boring

Jannik Sinner won the US Openhis second Slam of the season (and of his career) after the Australian Open. In the press conference, the world number 1 spoke about many topics, including his rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz and the differences between the victory in Melbourne and the one in New York.

And yet there are the usual critics who, despite Jannik’s achievements, still label the Italian’s tennis as boring. Former tennis star Andrea Petkovic stood up for Jannik and urged those who find Jannik’s tennis boring to go and see him live.

Through his blog End jokeAndrea wrote: “Even Novak Djokovic or Rafael Nadal sometimes slow down a bit to make more balls at the crucial moment. Not Jannik Sinner. One thing you can’t see on TV is the amazing fact that Jannik hits the ball even harder and more decisively at the most important moment of the match. For all those who find Sinner’s tennis boring, I recommend you to watch him live, if you can. The way he moves, always in perfect balance, the way his body is slightly tilted forward as if he is skiing down a slope, is beautiful. No matter how hard you hit him, he never loses his balance.”

Back to Sinner: at the press conference after his US Open victory he said:

“It’s quite unusual to win a first and a second Grand Slam in the same year. I don’t think you can really compare them because they’re different circumstances, different times of the year. I think in Melbourne it was kind of a relief because in my head I thought I was working towards it, and you never know if you can win a Slam or not, but if you win one you know you can potentially do it again.

Here it was difficult because even the conditions before the tournament were not easy. I felt that I was growing, match after match, and my confidence was growing at some point. It was different because I had more pressure this time, maybe a little bit more than in Australia. I am happy with how I handled it.”

Sinner was then asked about the rivalry with Carlos Alcaraz.

“I think it’s good for the sport to have new champions. I mean, it’s something new, but it’s also fun to see. It’s fun to see new rivalries. I have and will always have players who make me a better player, because there will be moments when they beat me. So you have to try to find a way to win against certain players. Even in the final with Fritz I could have served a little bit better, but you know, this makes me understand that the work never stops. It’s always a continuous work and in the end, if you want to become a better player, you always have to work, you have to have these daily routines, accept the difficult moments on the court.”
