An Omaha man serving a sentence for assault dies in prison

A 56-year-old Omaha man serving a lengthy sentence for a crash that left a young girl paralyzed died Thursday at the Nebraska State Penitentiary in Lincoln.

Kenneth Greer died at a hospital, according to a statement from the Nebraska Department of Corrections. Greer was serving a 19- to 20-year sentence after being found guilty of assault in August 2020.

Although the cause of death had not yet been determined, Greer was being treated for a medical condition, the statement said. As is the case when an inmate dies in custody, a grand jury will investigate.

Greer was initially charged with causing serious bodily injury while driving under the influence and leaving the scene of a personal injury accident. The charge was amended to second-degree assault in a plea agreement.

On Nov. 6, 2019, just before 5:30 p.m., Greer was driving his brother’s 2000 Chevy Silverado pickup westbound on Grand Avenue and struck the rear fender of a 2016 Kia Sorento northbound on 48th Street, according to Omaha police . The Kia spun and Greer fled westbound, then struck a 2012 Dodge Journey heading eastbound. Greer then drove through the stop sign at 50th and Grand Avenue and crashed into the rear of a 2012 Buick Verano.
