American wrestler Alan Vera dies at age 33

wrestler Alan Vera — who narrowly qualified for Team USA’s Olympic roster earlier this year — has died at the age of 33 … after suffering a medical emergency while playing soccer earlier this summer.

Executive Director of USA Wrestling Rich Bender announced the tragic news on Wednesday … revealing that Vera was in hospital recovering from cardiac arrest on July 29 when he passed away.

“The wrestling community mourns the loss of a great champion whose incredible life touched so many people within USA Wrestling and around the world,” Bender said.

A GoFundMe A page set up in Vera’s honor said the athlete suffered “an unexpected infection” over the weekend, leading to his death Monday night.

Born in Cuba, Vera played for the Cuban national team in the 2010s… and shone, winning bronze at the 2015 Pan American Games and gold at the 2016 Pan American Championships.

A short time later he emigrated to America and after receiving his American citizenship, he competed in several events for Team USA and won four Senior National titles.

Vera has also been a member of USA Wrestling’s Greco-Roman national team for the past four years.

“Since he came into my life in 2016, he has been a true leader, always ready to do everything for anyone who needs it,” said his coach, Herb housesaid. “His selflessness and dedication have made a lasting impression on me.”

Vera leaves behind his wife, Elena Pirozhkova — a two-time American Olympian — and newborn daughter, Alina.
