Aidan Chiles was hurt as Michigan State was throttled by No. 13 Indiana

EAST LANSING – So far.

Michigan State jumped out to a 10-0 lead against No. 13 Indiana before being completely dominated in all three phases of the match.

The Hoosiers (9-0, 6-0 Big Ten) scored 47 unanswered points and ran away for a 47-10 victory on Saturday against the Spartans (4-5, 2-4), who lost starting quarterback Aidan Chiles to a injury in the third quarter. The sophomore took a hit when he took a hit from a pair of defenders, went to the locker room and returned to the sideline, but did not return to the game.

Chiles was one of only three starters to leave the game due to injury, following cornerback Charles Brantley and safety Malik Spencer. Both defensive backs were injured in the first half and did not play again while Brantley used crutches and wore a boot on his left leg on the sideline. The Spartans have their second bye of the season next week before playing Illinois.

Indiana recaptured the Old Brass Spittoon and is now 9-0 for the first time in program history under first-year coach Curt Cignetti. Michigan State has lost five of six and is below .500 for the first time this season.

Chiles was sharp early but was under constant pressure and was dismissed three times before suffering an injury. He finished 16-for-24 passing for 193 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and received almost no help on the ground. After back-to-back impressive performances, the Spartans finished with minus 36 yards rushing and rushed for the second-worst total in program history. The Hoosiers recorded seven sacks and 15 tackles for a loss while living in the backfield.

Nick Marsh was a bright spot early, finishing with five catches for 78 yards and a touchdown to lead Michigan State.

Indiana’s Kurtis Rourke, out last week after thumb surgery, split the Spartans as he completed 19 of 29 throws for 263 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions before going to the bench midway through the fourth quarter. Elijah Sarratt posted four catches for 59 yards and two touchdowns.

Michigan State got off to a great start on both sides of the ball, starting with defensively forcing a three-and-out on the opening drive for the fourth straight game. That was followed by a 47-yard field goal by Jonathan Kim for a 3-0 lead as Indiana gave up its first points of the first quarter all season.

The Hoosiers’ first deficit of the season widened when Chiles led the Spartans down the field and a miserable red zone drive actually reached the end zone. On third-and-11, he scrambled to his right and bought time to find a sprawling Marsh, who stayed just in bounds for an 18-yard touchdown grab and a 10-0 lead with 2:39 to go in the first quarter. .

From there it was all Indiana the rest of the way.

The Hoosiers, who had zero first downs and just 10 yards on their first two possessions combined, responded with a seven-play, 75-yard drive. Rourke found Zach Horton wide open for a 17-yard touchdown to get within three points.

Brantley, who had already had a pair of pass breakups in the first half, apparently suffered a leg injury and was helped to the sideline before being wheeled to the locker room. More bad news soon followed as Ty Son Lawton scored on a 1-yard run to give the Hoosiers a 14-10 lead midway through the second quarter.

After Chiles was intercepted by Amare Ferrell for the second time in the first half, Indiana took advantage of a short field. Rourke bought time and found Sarratt for a four-yard touchdown and an 11-point lead with 2:10 left in the second quarter.

Things only got worse for Michigan State in the second half when Indiana blocked a punt for a safety and Rourke then threw an 18-yard touchdown to Myles Price for a 30-10 lead.

What little hope the Spartans had for a comebacker was eliminated when Chiles was hurt after being hit by Mikail Kamara and Rolijah Hardy. He walked under his own power from the field to the injury tent and then to the locker room with a towel over his head before returning to the sideline.

Things only got uglier for Michigan State from there as Cignetti kept his foot on the gas while continuing to throw the ball and apply pressure.
